How to Ride a Husky Sledge
Before you embark on your husky safari adventure with us, we highly recommend watching the video and reading through the instructions below. This way, you’ll be more familiar with the process when the time comes. Rest assured, for your safety, our guides will ensure you understand everything thoroughly before we begin the safari.
Sledge Setup:
Typically, there will be two people per sledge: one will act as the driver, while the other enjoys the ride as a passenger. You’ll have the opportunity to switch roles halfway through the safari.
Instructions for the Dog Sledge Driver:
- Stance and Grip: Keep both feet on the runners (the parts you stand on) and both hands firmly on the handlebar. Please note, the driver is not allowed to take pictures during the ride for safety reasons.
- Guide Signals: During the safari, your guide will use three hand signals to communicate with you:
- Stop (Hand Straight Up): When the guide raises their hand straight up, it means you must stop the sledge immediately. To do this, press down on the brake—a metal device located at the back of the sledge—with both feet.
- Go (Hand Up and Down): When the guide moves their hand up and down, it’s time to go. Gently release the brake and let the sledge start moving. If it doesn’t move right away, you can give it a slight push while keeping one foot on the runner.
- Slow Down (Waving Arm Out to the Side): If the guide waves their arm up and down to the side, it means you need to slow down. Lightly press the brake with one foot. Always maintain a safe distance of 5-10 meters between the leader dog of your team and the sledge in front of you.
Instructions for the Dog Sledge Passenger:
As a passenger, you’ll sit inside the sledge following the guide’s instructions. Keep your hands and feet inside the sledge at all times while it’s in motion.
Changing Drivers:
- Driver Preparation: The current driver should press down on the brake with both feet.
- Switching Positions: The passenger should then carefully stand up and move to stand on the brake alongside the driver. Once the new driver is in position and holding the brake securely, the original driver can move to sit as a passenger.
- Ready to Go: The new driver must keep both feet on the brake until they receive the “let’s go” signal from the guide.
With these instructions in mind, you’re ready to experience the thrill of driving a husky sledge. Enjoy your safari!
