The Martimoaapa nature reserve could be the best-preserved secret of Sea Lapland. Located only minutes from our lodge, this huge (164 sqkm) protected area is home to some of the largest and finest mire swamps in Northern Europe.
The area is a favourite nesting place for rare birds. It includes a flat, swampy area surrounding the Martimojärvi lake, as well as a hilly area peaking at the Penikka top, around 185 meters on sea level. The terrain varies from flat to very rugged.
While staying at the lodge Martimoaapa is definitely worth exploring. You can do this on your own in the summer and autumn. For the spring bird nesting season, we arrange guided birdwatching and photography workshops – please enquire.
For more experienced hikers there are possibilities for multi-day tours with overnight stay at the wilderness huts.
Overview
The quickest and easiest way to explore Martimoaapa is on foot starting and ending at the Hangassalmenaho parking area, about 15 minutes from the lodge. The Järviaapa trail is 9.6 km and is perfect for an easy day trek. We will take you there and give instructions and a map for exploring. There are a few viewing towers on the way. A shorter, 3km circular trail is perfect for families. Close to the parking area is a laavu (open air hut) with fire possibility and toilet.
A more demanding way to explore the Martimoaapa reserve is by walking the Martimoaapa trail (12.6 km, only for experienced hikers). In order to do this, we will drop you in the morning at the Kivalot parking area and meet you again in the evining at the Hangassalmenaho parking area.
